The majority of the people are from an unreached people group whose very name (Waray-waray , meaning ‘ nothing- nothing’), reveals their needs. The vast majority live in abject poverty. Up to the present, even if they have managed to improve their living conditions, living in a typhoon belt we soon see the reality of "Nothing Nothing" all over again. While there is great wealth in the area, the sad reality is that the rich have got richer, and the poor have become even poorer.
The majority of the workers earn just $5.00 a day (P 100), although the cost of living is incredibly high. The staple diet consists of rice and fish, however rice is already P18-20 a kilo, and a small fish P60 per kilo. Most live in small neipa (a native material like coconut leaves) homes of only one or two rooms. Many do not have any sewerage facilities, which is the cause of much problem. Likewise, electricity and running water is to many, a luxury!
But more than physical need, the spiritual need of these people is of great concern. Although the great majority are normally Catholic, they still hold many Superstitious beliefs that go hand in hand with the form of Catholicism practiced there. However, the people have a healthy respect for the things of God, and are open to hear of new life and abundance of life in Jesus. The overall percentage of born again Christians in Eastern and Northern Samar is just 1.15%
My wife and I believe that a MIGHTY CHANGE is on the way for these people. As we journeyed through the Island we sensed powerfully the heartbeat of LOVE that the Lord Jesus has for these people. There was a ‘spirit of revival’ in the churches we visited! We sensed and prophesied that a great surge of God’s power and blessing will soon deluge that Island as God’s people are faithful to him in prayer, worship and spreading His word. Everywhere we went we sensed that the very atmosphere was ‘ pregnant’ with the cloud of God’s soon to be outpoured blessing.

MANY APPEALS ARE MADE FOR AFRICA, SUDAN etc., BUT THESE PEOPLE HAVE BEEN FORGOTTEN. THE PASTORS OF THE CHURCHES ARE POOR. THEY DO NOT HAVE PROSPEROUS TITHING MEMBERS. IN THE CHURCHES I VISITED THEY HAVE NO ‘ SALARY’. HOWEVER, THEY LABOUR UNTIRINGLY FROM A HEART OF DEEP LOVE AND COMMITMENT TO JESUS.
